MYSTERY & NARRATIVE

Monique Crine, Michael Garlington, GR Martin, and Danielle Mourning

SLATE contemporary | 473 25th Street, Oakland, CA

June 16—July 30, 2016

SLATE contemporary, an art gallery in Uptown Oakland that specializes in contemporary abstract art, presents a plot twist with its 2016 early summer exhibition, Mystery & Narrative. Featuring photography by Michael Garlington and Danielle Mourning, and paintings by Monique Crine and GR Martin, Mystery & Narrative brings the figure to the foreground in a series of dramatic scenes that beckon the viewer in, but refuse to reveal themselves easily. A cloak of mystery pervades the exhibition, with one’s sense of what is ‘real’ and possible perpetually at play. Drawing upon the tropes of theater, from staged sets to dramatic characters, each artwork offers a rich performance, channeling history and fiction in varying proportions.

Join us on Thursday, June 16th, to celebrate the opening of this special exhibition with an Artists’ Reception from 6-8pm.  Curatorial and artist remarks will begin at 7pm.  Held in conjunction with 3rd Thursdays on 25th Street, when the block’s galleries and maker spaces offer extended evening hours.
